A Case of Horpes Zoster Transveres Myelitis

Abstract
Authors experienced a case of herpes zoster transverse myelitis involving spinal cord at the level of eruption of herpes zoster in August 1975. 63 year old female patient was admitted to Ewha Womans, University Hospital because of lower abdominal fullness with urinary retention, -weakness of left leg and warlking disturbance for 6 days. On physical examination, there were many pustules, crusts and silvery healing scars of herpetic vesicles in It. scapular area. Detailed neurologic examination revealed the following findings. Higher functions, skull and cranial nerves including fundi and upper limbs were normal. In the lower limbs, there were flaccid paralysis and absent tendon reflexes. The abdominal reflex could not be elecited and planter response as negative in it. There was loss of sensation below the level of T 5. Percussion over the lower abdomen revealed markedly distended bladder with urinary overflow C.S.F. findings showed normal pressure, negative Queckenstedt¢¥s test, increased protein and a cell acount of 20 leukocytes per c. mm.(all lymphocytes) She was progressivly improved following the treatment with corticosteroid and physiotherapy ina period of 4 weeks.
